Despite the huge number of OpenCart powered websites in existance, theme designers have generally paid little attention to creating vibrant, innovative designs for OpenCart. It’s difficult to explain, given the fact that OpenCart’s theme architecture is fairly easy to navigate, and certainly easier to work with than some other platforms, like Magento.
Fortunately, the good folks at ThemeForest have not ignored OpenCart. In fact, there are now quite a few great OC designs on ThemeForest. Unfortunately, not all designers have updated their themes for OpenCart 1.5.x, so take care to note compatibility before purchasing!
If you haven’t shopped for themes at ThemeForest, I highly recommend taking a look. We’ve purchased several themes, graphic elements and more, and they consistently have the lowest prices on the best quality add-ons around. Consider this my personal endorsement. – Bret Williams
The following are 5 current OpenCart 1.5 ThemeForest themes:
This theme is a port of a Magento theme. I’ve gone through that process before, and once you do, you really do begin to appreciate the ease of working with OpenCart.
I like the simple elegance of Dropshipper. Although it implies use as a theme for a dropshipping product online store, I think it could well work for a variety of different stores. The layout is simple enough to be used for almost any type of hard goods store.
Perhaps the boldest theme of all OpenCart themes at ThemeForest, Phantom Shop may be the most limiting of all the designs in terms of applying it to different store types. However, what I like about Phantom Shop is that it shows just how extensively you can design for OpenCart.
I’m pleased to find more and more designers moving toward clean, airy designs for e-commerce. Online consumers don’t need to feel beat over the head when shopping. The Gentle theme, from first look, might appear to be just a re-coloring of the default OpenCart theme. Wrong. The theme carefully sculpts new colors, edges and spacing to give OpenCart the modern appeal it deserves.
As with almost every theme, the Kinder theme could be used for a far wider array of possible product offering than simply children’s clothes and toys. That really becomes the challenge for all of us looking at themes for e-commerce sites: can a theme targeted toward one niche be useful in another. Kinder helps by providing you with four different color schemes that can also help extend its usefulness for non-kid’s stores.
As you can see, more designers are adding Web 2.0, contemporary designs to the OpenCart platform. I suspect we’ll see more and more OpenCart designs in the near future.
