We've never stopped believing that the Web could add true value to people just like us -- small-to-medium sized entrepreneurs. People who need to reduce costs while increasing productivity and efficiency.

At Novusweb, we've decided to try a grand and noble experiment. We're setting out to prove certain beliefs we have about success on the Net:

1. Build the core and then expand. Focus on the core workflow or need. Start with a solid foundation. Once implemented, a successful project will soon create its own requirements for the next phase; your end-users will quickly let you know what needs to be added next, saving you thousands of dollars that might be wasted developing applications that no one will use.
2. Build for the small business. No one has really figured out how to build for small business. If the solutions cost millions, you can't make the financial models work. Sorry, but even we saw that train wreck coming. Small businesses need powerful tools just as much as the big boys do. Except that the smaller enterprise doesn't have large IT departments and budgets. The Net is perfect for this market. Hopefully, Novusweb will dominate before everyone else wakes up.
3. Focus on specialized verticals. We're not trying to build QuickBooks online, or a One-Size-Fits-All inventory management system. We are going to hone in on special niche verticals, starting with those in which we have considerable domain expertise. If you take a market segment that can't afford high costs for solutions (small businesses), and you carve that into even smaller slivers, then you can see that only the most nimble, inexpensive providers could possibly succeed. Guess what? That's us.

Following are brief explanations of some areas in which we're focusing our attention and our efforts. We're not going to divulge too much, as we like competitive advantage.

Vertical Solutions

The acronym "ASP" has become quite a buzzword among dot-com suppliers (those firms who provide programming and development services, software and infrastructure to dot-com companies). Unfortunately, it's vague and confusing. ASP stands for two distinctly different things: Active Server Pages (a programming language from Microsoft), and Application Service Provider (a provider of hosted, Web-based applications). While the former has been around for several years, the latter definition became trendy during 2000.

However, the concept of hosting applications can be quite broad and confusing in itself. At Novusweb, we truly believe the opportunity for the Web to prove its own value is to deliver low-cost functionality to small and medium sized enterprises. Not as broad solution suites, but as specialized applications for niche vertical markets (providers as such are called "VSP's," or Vertical Solution Providers).

For instance, consider the niche market of Podiatry. While there are multi-million dollar investments being made in dot-coms that promise to eventually provide medical practices with comprehensive practice management systems, we feel a more successful approach -- for both the doctor and Novusweb -- is to create a focused solution that addresses the unique needs of a Podiatrist, his staff and his patients. This can't be profitable for a dot-com that insists on building a NASA-class computer infrastructure. But for modest, little Novusweb, it is viable. We use mostly off-the-shelf hardware and software. We utilize a rapid development process that accurately delivers quality solutions. And we don't need a million customers just to break even. A couple of hundred does just fine.

If you've been reading other sections of our Web site, you will find many references to our NovuStart Rapid Development Process. It is unique. And it works.

Or course, we're happy to keep it close to the vest. After all, it helps us remain competitive. However, we also believe it could greatly impact the way Web-based solutions are produced regardless of technological platform.

Therefore, we're in the initial stages of designing tools for developers to use to dramatically shorten time-to-market while producing better performing and useful products. We're looking at both Web-based and stand-alone products, although we're convinced a hosted solution is more viable.
